In the driving scene narrated by the directer he beggings with saying "This documentary has become something different", and indeed it had. This documentary was not only created to show how amazingly talented this young girl was, but to prove to society that it was real, and Marla was creating these beautiful abstract paintings herself. This documentary became personal after the Olmesteds put all of their trust in this reporter to belive them. After a horrible expeirience on sixty minutes the Olmsteds were thretend ,harrased, accused, and judged by people in their own nieghborhood, reporters, and anynomus people over the internet. I believe he decided to place himself in this video to voice his opinon about the sitiuation. He belived in the family, but yet had his doubts. He was courios as to what really went on behind closed doors.
The director says "I would rather be stupid and not know about this kind of stuff". By saying this he means he hopes that they are telling the truth and it would be horrible if they weren't, and if they were he would rather not know. They are such a kind family , and have been threw so much. He gets attached to the family and Marla personaly He also states that if they are liars they are really good ones.
